The Liver Function Test
Panel checks a wide range of liver markers related to liver damage infection.
What markers are checked in the Liver Function Test Panel?
The Liver Function Test Panel checks blood levels of Hepatitis A IgM & Total Antibodies, Hepatitis B Core IgM Antibodies, Hepatitis B Surface Antigens, Hepatitis C Antibodies, ALT (SGPT), Albumin, Alkaline Phosphatase, AST (SGOT), and Bilirubin (Direct & Total).
Why are markers in measured in the Liver Function Test important?
ALT and AST are liver enzymes that are released into the blood when the liver is damaged. Alkaline Phosphatase is an enzyme that can be released when the bile duct is blocked or inflamed. Elevated bilirubin levels cause jaundice and the bilirubin type can help identify the cause of jaundice. Albumin and Total Protein level will check your overall nutritional status. The Hepatitis antibody levels measured assess for prior or active infection to Hepatitis A, B or C.
